Chewy's Big Adventures: How a Rescued Dog Found His Ride

Chewy's Big Adventures: How a Rescued Dog Found His Ride

If you've biked around St. Petersburg, FL and spotted a tiny brown dog riding up front like he owns the place — that was Chewy. Part adventure buddy, part people-watching professional, and full-time local celebrity. Everywhere he goes, strangers stop to smile and say hello.

Chewy, a 13-year-old rescue pup, has become a local legend in St. Petersburg with his adventurous spirit and charming personality.

Chewy's story didn't begin with breezy bike rides. Over 11 years ago, he was found living on the streets of Texas — injured, alone, and believed to have been hit by a car. He arrived as a medical foster needing reconstructive surgery on one of his back legs, along with several other procedures over the years: two hernia surgeries, chest surgery, and more. Through every setback, Chewy just kept bouncing back.

A DNA test a few years ago confirmed he's 50% poodle, 50% chihuahua — though his family usually just calls him their little "brown dog." Now around 13 or 14, he's lived a life most dogs can only dream of: hiking mountains in Colorado, exploring islands in the Pacific Northwest, paddleboarding through Florida, and traveling full-time like a tiny, furry nomad. He absolutely loves being outside and part of the action.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

About two years ago, everything changed very suddenly. Chewy became temporarily paralyzed from the waist down. The diagnosis: IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) — a condition where damaged discs in the spine rupture and compress the spinal cord. It's more common in small and long-bodied breeds, and it can come on without warning.

Thankfully, emergency surgery gave his family their little guy back. But recovery came with strict instructions from his neurologist: no upright carrier positions that put pressure on the spine. No dangling. No being held like a baby. For a dog who loves adventure, this could have meant the end of his outdoor life — but his family wasn't ready to give up.

Finding the BuddyRider® was, in Sarah's words, "such a gift." The seat allows Chewy to ride in a natural, comfortable seated position — no spinal compression, no strain. He settles into it almost immediately, and he's even been known to doze off mid-ride, lulled by the breeze and the rhythm of the wheels.

The Mighty Chewy!

"It's given him a way to continue doing something he loves — cruising around town with us, people watching, and enjoying the fresh air," says Sarah. "At this stage in his life, experiences matter so much to us, and the BuddyRider® has helped us continue including him in our adventures safely."

For dogs with spinal conditions like IVDD, this natural posture is far safer than traditional pet carriers or backpacks that hold dogs upright or suspended.

Still Out There, One Ride at a Time

Today, Chewy is still living his best life — sniffing the breeze, supervising the world from his front-row seat, and charming everyone he meets. "He really is such a little treasure," says Sarah, "and we're so grateful to have found a way for him to keep enjoying the outdoors."
